Have you made the choice to consign your child’s outgrown clothes and toys? It’s a smart and sustainable decision that not only clears out clutter but also helps you earn some extra cash. But, diving into the consignment world may require a little preparation. Whether you’re a newbie or have consigned at a sale or two, there are essentials that can make your consignment journey smoother and more rewarding.
The Basics
- Inventory Assessment: Start by sorting through your kid’s items. Determine what’s in good condition and what’s not. Remember, quality is key in consignment.
- Cleaning and Prepping: Ensure that all items are clean, stain-free, and in working order. A well-presented item is more likely to sell.

Must-Haves for Consigning:
- Hangers, Safety Pins, Zip Ties, Ziplock Bags, Card Stock, Tagging Gun: Each sale will have different requirements so read the rules of your sale.
- Detailed Descriptions: Be thorough in describing your items. Mention the brand, size, and any other pertinent information. Use abbreviations to fit the information on your tags if needed.

Nice-to-Haves:
- Rolling Rack, Wagon, Blue Zip Ikea-Style Bags: These can be used at home for easy tagging and for transport to the sale.
- Pricing Guide: Having a pricing guide can help you set realistic prices that ensure a fair return and a quick sale. Many sales have a pricing guide that aligns with their area on their website.

- Inventory Management System: Gather your items by like sizes, types, etc so that they are easier to enter into the inventory system and process.
- Schedule: Set aside specific times for managing your consignment tasks. Consistency can help keep things organized and manageable.
Some of my favorites over the years are included in this post – I hope everyone has a fantastic consignment season!
